5 Photographers, 10 Years After (1)

The birth of photography—a term deriving from the Greek words for light and drawing—may generally be dated to the first half of the 19th century. Until the early 20th century, the two main fields of activity concentrated on landscapes and portraits. Before the advent of photography, portraiture—in drawing, painting or sculpture—was essentially a marker of social or economic class. With the emergence of photography and its growing popularity in the second half of the 19th century, this hierarchical tradition changed to the degree that everyman could own a photographed portrait of him/herself. The two major perceptions regarding the ontological status of the photographic medium in the world, at least until the mid-20th century, were that of photography as a window on the world, namely an objective indexical reflection of reality, and photography as a mirror or reflection of reality, namely a personal and changing subjective expression of reality as well as the self. In 1978 a comprehensive exhibition on this theme, "Mirrors and Windows: American Photography since 1960," was staged at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, by the Museum's photography curator, John Szarkowski.2

The perception of the photographic portrait, in-between these two poles, ranged between the historical attempt to depict the figure of the photographed subject, with utmost precision, an attempt which relied on developing technological abilities, and an elaboration of the notion of portraiture to more abstract and metaphorical realms. One of the most striking precedents exemplifying the withdrawal from focus on the subject's face as an exclusive expression of his/her portrait is discernible in the comprehensive series of photographs created by Alfred Stieglitz between 1918 and 1925, in which he focused on the figure of his wife, artist Georgia O'Keeffe. In the early photographs in the series O'Keeffe's face is still visible, albeit from a photographic angle unusual in that period, whereas later photographs in the series show only her hands as signifiers of her entire figure. This fundamental change in the perception of the portrait indicates, in a way, one of photography's most dramatic moments of transition to the modern era and its autonomous evolution as an accepted medium in the broader field of art.

The group of artists participating in the current exhibition developed artistically at the turn of the 21th century. In terms of academic indoctrination, they were educated on the work of the great photographers of the 20th century, on the one hand, and on the practical, real-time confrontation with the transition from analog to digital photography, on the other. This transition embeds numerous, intricate aspects, primarily an essential change in the material perception of the photographic act, a change associated with a transition from using film and photographic paper comprising a base layer, a layer of light-sensitive chemicals, and a protective top layer, to digital technology based on binary coding rather than on an analog association sustained by an optical mechanism and actual photochemical material. Simultaneously, a fundamental, general conceptual change occurred in the world with regard to notions such as truth, testimony, and original, concepts whose validity deteriorated in the second half of the 20th century in light of various postmodern theories introduced by such scholars as Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard, Fredric Jameson, and others.

In his seminal essay Camera Lucida,3 Roland Barthes formulated with great clarity the essential premises associated with the medium of photography and its indexical relationship with reality. He maintained that "in Photography I can never deny that the thing has been there," going on to explain that "The name of Photography's noeme will therefore be: 'That-has-been,' or again: the Intractable." Phenomenologically, Barthes argued, the photograph attests that "What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially." In so doing not only did he sanctify photography's indexical relationship with reality, but he also formulated, possibly for the first time, the complex link between that which is present in the image and the absence which remains in reality, between the act of photography and death.

The transition to digital photography dramatically changed the status of both photography and the photograph. The changes occurred, as aforesaid, under a combination of philosophical, technological, and cultural circumstances, and ultimately led to a situation where not only is it possible to produce an image which resembles traditional analog photography via digital coding, but it is even possible to "take photographs" without a negative, without a camera, and to produce a photographic image by means of simple digital simulation. The digital image known to us today has thus transformed into a simulacrum, a copy with no original or, in fact—an image which is both an original and a copy. The wide range of digital processing possibilities has undermined the causality of the photographic act and the analog image; it has undermined the confidence in the inevitable and indelible link between the object as it is in reality, and its emergence in the photographic image. Alongside this change, there was an imperceptible growth in the accessibility of the medium of photography and the dispersion of its products, which led to a flooding of the cultural field with diverse images and to dissolution of the familiar categories of meaning. Hence, the photographic image is no longer a derivative of a specific time-space relationship, of a given moment, decisive to a greater or lesser extent, but conceals an inherent measure of deceit, as described by Hubertus v. Amelunxen in his essay "Photography after Photography: The Terror of the Body in Digital Space."4

Although the fateful outcomes of this change have been well known and formulated in theory for several decades, in actuality, in everyday life, the authority of the digital image remains identical to that of the analog image. We continue to read newspapers, we continue to watch news reports, we continue to photograph important events in our lives; we are still accustomed to believe. In this sense, it seems that the subversion of the photographic image's truth value is one of the most jolting experiences for us as human beings, and therefore, one of the formative changes of the 20th century.

Against this backdrop, it is important to read the work of the five artists featured in this exhibition with respect to the fact that they continue to engage in photography. An essentially direct photography; photography based on the relationship between photographer and subject in a given place and time; photography which is conscious of the power of the gaze and functions as a means for taking a stand in the world; photography which is not necessarily digitally processed, and does not focus on the technological dimension inherent to the medium and the fundamental changes it has undergone in this respect in recent decades. The work of these five artists seems to attempt to push a little further the very use of the notion of 'photography' as it has been conceived, contemplated, and used over the course of 150 years, before the digital era; before Photoshop, the Internet, and simulation. At the same time, their work does not reject the very use of these new tools, and mainly—it is highly conscious of the profound conceptual change they implemented in the broad cultural field. To some extent, it is based on the attempt to generate a fictive suspension in the duration of the work, which is akin to compensation for the loss of the hidden, mystical if you will, part in the old photographic process. In this sense, the exhibition strives to tarry and remain in a type of indeterminate intermediate realm between the analog and the digital, between testimony and fiction, between knowledge and quandary.

Another axis linking the works of the participants is the gender axis. The featured five artists met during their studies in the departments of photography and fine art at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. They completed their BFAs in the late 1990s, and have since continued studying, teaching, and exhibiting in various venues, all the while maintaining their friendly relations and professional collaboration. Many of their works address questions of identity and gender, social belonging and detachment, identification and self-differentiation. While their areas of activity are ostensibly tangential, they each construct unique, highly divergent thematic, mental and formal worlds.

Ten years after their graduation, this exhibition strives to explore the overall position generated and proposed by their different work processes with regard to both the history of photography and the notion of portraiture. Throughout the latter part of the 20th century, growing, excessive attention was dedicated to the body's presence and the representation of identity in culture and art. Upon the conclusion of the previous century and the beginning of the current one, the emphasis shifted to issues of space, of private/public relationship, and to essential questions regarding the organization of form and information in society. At the same time, many photographers turned to the photographic procedure itself, lingering on the power apparatuses it represents and simultaneously generates. The fact that all five artists graduated around the same time from the same academic institution is all but marginal to understanding the course of their work, as well as that of the entire exhibition. Throughout the history of art, a common school usually indicated specific influential teachers, a certain ideological orientation, and sometimes a common style as well, and it ultimately manifested itself in significant and influential presence in the world. Outstanding precedents of photography schools which formulated a general cultural position and had substantial influence on the occurrences in the international art field, may be identified in the so-called Boston School,5 on the one hand, and the group of artists that emerged at the Department of Photography of the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the late 20th century,6 on the other.

Focused scrutiny of the work of the five participating artists highlights the fact that their works, despite their divergence, mark a clear position with regard to the notion of portraiture: the procedure of portrait photography is no longer a goal in itself, but rather a single element in an intricate visual semantic configuration, whereby these artists strive not only to explore their world, but also to take a stand in it.

6. During the 1960s artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher established the Department of Photography at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. The photographic perception they promoted was one of a regulating practice centered on collecting, analysis, sorting, and classification of material settings and spaces. The act of regulation lent photography a conceptual nature, exposed the structuring modes of the visual image, and thereby also the modes of socio-cultural construction of the depicted material settings. The department spawned the next generation of German photography, who subsequently became the leading artists of their generation in the field of photography, among them Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, and Candida Hofer.

Shai Ignatz

WIZO Women, Melbourne, Australia, 2009-2010

In November 2009 Shai Ignatz traveled to Melbourne, Australia for three weeks, and photographed a group of approximately eighty women from the local chapter of the WIZO organization. The initial series of photographs was commissioned. It was taken with a digital camera in studio conditions against a neutral background without additional lighting, in a "warm seat" method. Almost without changing the photographic situation, the women switched before the lens, and were depicted in a context which was, in fact, twofold: documentation of the WIZO Australia members for the organization's in-house needs and a concurrent exploration of the range of artistic and personal possibilities inherent in the given situation, an exploration which is a natural continuation of Ignatz's practice in recent years. From this group Ignatz chose several women whom he approached, asking to photograph them in more intimate conditions in their homes. These photographs reveal more complex compositions, exposing secondary details which attest to the women's personal taste and socioeconomic status, and mainly—to Ignatz's own attitude in the interaction with them and the invasion of their privacy.

Ignatz's defined work conditions indeed generate emotional involvement, yet one which does not strive to penetrate the innermost recesses of the figures' psyche, to delve into their natures, and mediate their existence. The emotional involvement is manifested in a certain sensitivity which makes possible the very encounter, in such a manner that the photographed figures consent to the photographer's presence and the photographic act within clear boundaries that are never crossed. In the context of the exhibition, this is partly why the names of the photographed subjects are not mentioned, but only the fact that they are WIZO members. Moreover, the work process is based on a long delay between the moment in which the photograph is taken and the moment in which the images are selected to be printed, and on dissociation from considerations such as the representativeness of the depicted figures or the personal commitment to them, so that the process through which an individual woman is differentiated from the group and examined in relation to that group occurs not during the shooting process, but only during the subsequent processing and editing. Hence, the photographs in this body of work attest to the photographer, more than they do to the photographed subjects.

Ignatz's work exists as a series, as if it were unwilling to settle for the power of the decisive moment or the potential enigma inherent in a single image. In its totality, however, the work does not recount a story, nor does it form a documentation, but rather, it raises questions such as: What is acquaintance? What is the act of photography? What do the conditions of commissioned photography allow artistically? In fact, the work seems to address mainly fundamental questions pertaining to the situation of commissioned photography and the photographer-photographed relationship arising from it and being explored within it, rather than the given unique test case on which it is centered. For Ignatz, the ability to break the boundaries of the obvious, to stir up interest in the routine or banal, to undermine patterns of fore-knowledge, is the very essence of the work. Hence, his work transpires in nuances, both formally and conceptually.

In the video piece The Commission, created following the consolidation of the series of photographs, Ignatz talks with Jo Gostin, WIZO Australia President, who helped him execute the project. The conversation provides a fascinating background regarding the role division between the two and the project as a whole, and more importantly, sheds direct light on the openness and awareness of both parties to its complex definition, its diverse spatial implications, and the fact that in any event, the given context of the image remains in the eye of the beholder.

Uri Gershuni

Selective Mutism, 2008-2010

The body of work presented by Uri Gershuni in the exhibition is based mostly on studio photography of anonymous men. The photographs surrender great intimacy, which is signified by the peeling off of the clothing, the encounter's location on a sofa or a simple bed with white sheets, the direct eye contact discernible in most cases, and, at times, by the performance of sexual acts. In some respects, the work strives to touch upon realms of non-speech, of silent communication, sensuality, and passion. In this context, the praxis of photography is revealed as a practice of acquaintance, even if the artist is already familiar with the figures. Through the act of photography Gershuni ostensibly attempts to get to know the photographed figures, focus on specific or fundamental aspects of their character, even seek a possibility of fusion, a potential moment in which a flickering identification of the self may elucidate itself in the portrait of the other. Since this is a moment made possible precisely through the analog nature of the photographic act, a moment eliminated by digital availability, Gershuni's work process strives to create a duration, to construct an archeology of an image. In this context, his insistence on film photograph (all the works were shot on 6x7 film, digitally scanned, and produced as Lambda prints) is associated not with the quality or appearance of the result, but rather with the nature of the work process. Film photography disallows reflection in real time. Elements of uncertainty, horror, secret, suspension, exposure and revelation thus become inherent to the time frame. The time span passing between the moment of encounter and photography, and the moment of confrontation with the photographic product, which may take place months later, is a significant chapter in the process of work. This lapse of time makes not only for a renewed encounter of the artist with himself and with the subject of the work, but also for a fresh identification of details, minute and substantial alike, of which he was not previously aware.

Gershuni's work is typified by formalist austerity, on the one hand, and a type of thematic wildness, on the other. It stretches the boundaries between the sublime and the abject, the erotic and the pornographic, profoundly exploring aspects of interpersonal tension or closeness generated under conditions of foreignness. Thus, it challenges the viewer by juxtaposing artistic, aesthetic, and moral questions, forcing him to confront his own private values which are often unformulated. The scrutiny of the notion of masculinity is performed through a broad range of gestures and postures, alluding to visual precedents such as the figures of Narcissus, Bacchus, and the like, in terms of the correspondence with "high" art (and especially with Italian Baroque painting), on the one hand, and through dialogue with quasi-"inferior" photography associated with the worlds of magazines, Internet, private or coincidental photography, on the other. The photographs themselves combine rigidity and softness, yielding and emptiness, great beauty and crudeness.

Rona Yefman

Strange Fruits (i Love my life!), 2010

Identity is a recurrent theme in Rona Yefman's works. Time and again she challenges the boundaries of the definition of private and national, unique and generic identity, while deconstructing the masculine and feminine, childish and mature, conservative and alternative ingrained in all of us. Her work refers to the world of music, to Punk culture, to ostensibly closed communities, and various individual characters who live within society, yet refuse to discipline themselves in keeping with its fettering, subjugating frame. In so doing, her work engages with identified figures, possibly real, possibly imaginary, such as Pippi Longstocking, Martha Bouke, Netiva Ben-Yehuda, etc., but also with anonymous, unknown marginal figures. The role-playing, the adoption and switching of identities, the eccentric staging, the accentuated or blurred sexuality—all these serve Yefman in her relentless striving for various, radical embodiments of the freedom of thought, action, and being. At the same time, Yefman lingers on covert and overt tensions between states of vulnerability and manifestations of aggression, undermining the distinctive, safe borders between the documentary and the staged, the existing and the timed. By combining photographs associated with the notion of performance, whether private or public, with photographs spawned by random wandering and encounters, she fuses the intimate and personal with the social and public. In some respect, her work brings back to life, as it were, the concept of street photography and the themes addressed by the work of early photographers such as Weegee, Lisette Model, Diane Arbus, and others, while also echoing the work of contemporary directors such as Larry Clark or Harmony Korine, who have, to some extent, adopted street photography's underlying logic, which they expand and carry over to the cinematic field. Turning to the other, however, Yefman does not signify him as such. Not only is her gaze at the other non-judgmental and non-patronizing, and her depiction of him is respectful, and marked by yearning and identification, rather than voyeurism, her work also includes photographs of herself and her family, taken and presented concurrently. In this she challenges not only the normative gender, familial and social role division, but also the very assumption that boundaries can be outlined and fixed defining categories can be drawn.

The multiplicity of works in the exhibition space, to the point of near excess, indicates not only the attempt to call for a fundamental plurality of options, but also to the stubborn struggle to make it concretely possible. The pure heterogeneity thus arising from the work, which comprises photographs taken over fourteen years, is akin to a dynamic state of trans-avant-garde in motion, which does not become fixed at any given point. Accordingly, the choice between stills or video, the photographic language, and display-related decisions change from one project to the next, from one period to the next, from frame to frame, from position to position. The result, presented against the backdrop of a pitch black wall, imitates a cinematic storyboard, opening up the range of the work's reading possibilities, while deliberately preventing any one-dimensional interpretation.

Rami Maymon's work is characterized by refinement and restraint, juxtaposing direct photography and material installations in space, which turn out to be enigmatic and highly charged both formalistically and psychologically. Concurrently, his work addresses fundamental questions pertaining to the medium of photography and the photograph's changing status over the years, while exposing the mechanisms of production and control associated with photography in particular and the field of art and culture as a whole.

This dual engagement is repeatedly manifested in the exhibition space. Photographic portraits extracted from a book transform into three-dimensional objects by folding the paper, rendering it an object, photographing it, inserting it in a wooden box. Photographed bodies lend themselves to the camera with a softness fused with sensuality, devotion, and suspicion. Body touches matter, photography brushes against design, organization becomes meaning. The tension between two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, between photography and sculpture, between documentation and staging, intervention and neutrality, simplicity and sophistication, permeates this body of work, generating its distinctive enigmatic intricacy.

In his work, Maymon addresses issues of identity, singularity, and essence on the level of the individual and portrait, as well as the level of the medium in general. This is appended by his sculptural approach to the photographic act and the possibilities inherent in it. Indeed, all the featured works were taken digitally, yet their processing, in both the Photoshop and printing phases, strives to dig into them, to engage in their materiality. In some of the portrait photographs, this process begins as a type of sculptural intervention in the manner in which the depicted subject is positioned, or in the massive make-up associated with an act of painting and the masking of the photographed figure, continuing, in some cases, also through explicit digital or sculptural intervention as a means to infuse the work with an additional material layer.

The figures featured in the photographs may be relatives, friends or strangers. Nevertheless, the photographs teach us very little about these figures or about Maymon's relations with them. In fact, the images remain undeciphered, and to some extent form fertile ground for projection. Ultimately, despite the sense of closeness and intimacy, the concept of the portrait arising from Maymon's work is revealed to be an empty one; a shell that may, potentially, contain whatever we choose to insert into it.

Maymon's work process clearly exposes the fact that notions such as immanence, originality, or authenticity are entirely invalid, and that the issues currently relevant for discussion in the context of photography no longer pertain to a binding indexical affinity between the image and its object. The title of the work accordingly refers to the theme of interior and exterior, revelation and concealment, in both psychic/physiological and design/architectural sense.

David Adika

Portraits, 2008-2010

David Adika's work habitually combines portrait and still life photographs. It is distinguished by its sensitive and precise treatment of overt and covert cultural tensions between East and West, high and low, aggressive and restrained. Concurrently, his work offers an organization of intimacy. Portrait transforms into object, wall becomes frame, space turns into a work of art in a manner which eludes the viewer's perception as to the distance or proximity between the artist and his subjects. The work spans close-up photographs of friends and of objects extracted from Adika's private world, taken with a gaze which is shaped and constructed via accumulation and delay, through profound acquaintance (as opposed to depiction of strange objects based on a yearning for closeness or exploration of its very feasibility).

The result is meticulous, exact, stoic, yet not necessarily perfect photographs. They are presented with all their beauty and quirkiness, their symbolism, flaws and deviations. Elements of foreignness, refugeeism, blackness, displacement, cultural uprooting, falseness, etc. pervade the images, whose objects ostensibly carry a cultural DNA in their bodies, albeit one long cut off from a natural context of time and place.

The painting of the walls reinforces the decorative potential of the work, yet turns out to be an expansion of conceptual processes which are formulated in the photographs themselves. The two walls are painted with skin colors, whether lighter of darker, concatenating the gamut of skin tones appearing in the works. The colors' presence on the walls, as an additional frame for the work, underscores its displayable dimension, a dimension which makes educated use of the practice of hiding and beautification innate to the use of make-up and their link to presentability, but also to concealment.

In so doing, Adika's work exposes, as a self-evident, the fact that the aesthetic is political, that the cultural is aggressive, that the familiar is the accepted. At the same time, it strives to expand the boundaries of these notions, and thereby to undermine them.

Adika has had solo exhibitions at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art and Ashdod Art Museum, at Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv, and the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, among other venues, and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Israel and abroad. Among his better known projects is the series Mahogany (2003).
